Queen of Stone
The Cailleach [kai-lahk] is a pre-Christian Gaelic goddess, an old woman who personifies the forces of land, water, winter, and ancestors. Similarly to Indigenous creator spirits, she is said to have created mountains, springs, and lakes across the landscape in Scotland and Ireland. Through the Scottish smallpipes, guitars, vocals, Gaelic language, and live looping, the Cailleach is reimagined in a new land.
With traditional song, story, and new compositions, Cailleach explores Australia's shadows: what it means to belong to a stolen land, the wrecking of soil and climate, and ancestral songs of resistance, grief, and strength.
Musical influences include Lankum, Brighde Chaimbeul, and Eoghan O Ceannabhain.Â
A collaboration between Naarm-based folk musicians Laura Campbell (Ungus Ungus Ungus, Gusto Gusto) and Sam Hall (Gusto Gusto), the project has been enchanting audiences since its launch in August 2025.
